Tamron also sold a 2X matched teleconverter to use with it to bring it to 1:1 180mm, but I'm not particularly impressed with that, and any good 2X delivers about the same IQ it's a floating element design, using using a long tube to get to 1:1 wouldn't be great.īTW, the Sony 100mm STF is the 7th sharpest lens DxO has tested, easily outclassing all those. The 52B also (rarely) suffers from the "blue spot" sensor reflection issue when used stopped down with strong backlight - the later versions (even the 52BB) don't have that issue. The oldie I use is one of the 1:2 f/2.5 52B (the linked test summarizes as a bit worse off-axis than the modern lenses). According DxO, the Sigma is very comparable. I honestly don't think it out-resolves the older versions, and is probably even a tad worse on average in that metric. The new one I have is the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Lens for Canon EF, which is still selling for about $650. I can't see that's particularly an issue, those apertures are not something I'd use for macros, maybe if I used it in low light for something else There seems to be quite a few variations of the 90mm Tamrons, any i should get? I think I read the newest one was minimum 3.2/3.5 aperture but the older one was 2.8 min. BTW, I don't generally favor AF over manual focus, especially for macros. My old f/2.5 Tamron is much smaller and hence it gets carried more often, and I have one of the Sony 100mm STFs, which beats everything in bokeh smoothness, so I tend to use it for near-macros and it's also good on a short tube for macros. That said, I usually find myself not using it on my Sonys, although it also works great on them via the Metabones adapter. Easily the best of my macros that I can put on my 5D IV. It's a very good lens, with nothing to complain about - including really excellent bokeh. Never tried the Sigma, but I've been fond of pretty much every version of the 90mm Tamron macros, and have the latest Canon EF model. In respect to sharpness and IQ, can anyone offer any comparisons? From what I've read, there is little between them. The other option is a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro Clearly manual focus only which isn't a deal breaker as I'll be mainly shooting still objects. I'm currently debating between buying a Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 AF Di canon fit and converting to l- mount. I'm looking for a cheap option for some macro work.
